NHL Reporter and Oilers Insider John Shannon says he's 100% sure that Connor McDavid will not sign extension before the start of the season, giving Leafs fans hope.

The Toronto Maple Leafs endured a substantial roster subtraction this summer when Mitch Marner was dealt to the Vegas Golden Knights before the start of free agency.
Losing that kind of star power will certainly sting, but the Maple Leafs hope to endure that loss by replacing Marner's production by committee, and changing the dynamic in Toronto by adding players with some bite to their game.
The Leafs first added Matias Maccelli in exchange for a conditional 3rd round pick, giving them another skilled playmaker on the roster, and followed that up by bringing in 6'4" heavyweight pivot Nicolas Roy in the Marner deal, and also landed big, bruising grinder Dakota Joshua from the Vancouver Canucks to round things out.

NHL Insider John Shannon's Recent Report on Connor McDavid Giving Maple Leafs Fans Hope for a Potential Homecoming

It was always a popular notion that the Leafs would refrain from spending big this summer in hopes of using their glut of cap space next summer to take a run at signing Toronto native Connor McDavid, who is on an expiring deal in Edmonton. Now, a report from NHL Insider John Shannon is giving the Leafs some hope.
"So we believe John Shannon was the first to report this on his latest episode of 100% Hockey Podcast that Connor McDavid won't have a contract extension in place before the Home Opener on October 8th & McDavid will go into the regular season with his current contract & no extension will be done.

John is as connected as it gets with the Oilers organization among those who cover the team in Edmonton."
Originally, it was believed that McDavid and the Oilers were closing in on an extension this summer. Now, however, following Shannon's report, some have begun to speculate that perhaps things aren't as positive in Edmonton as most believe.
Recently, McDavid met with the media in Calgary while taking part in Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp. During this event, some believe that McDavid's talk about wanting to win in Edmonton and his intentions to eventually get a deal done were genuine. Others viewed it as lip service, much like the comments Mitch Marner made in Toronto before deciding to leave.
Nobody knows exactly what to make of any of this yet, but this latest report certainly gives fans in Toronto hope that a homecoming for McDavid is at least possible.
