A Toronto reporter brought the worst out of Auston Matthews, forcing the Leafs captain to scoff at him during a live interview following his return from 4 Nations.
Spicy Auston Matthews is officially back, ladies and gentlemen.
Matthews and Marner were both on the ice for the game-winning goal in Canada's 3-2 overtime win over Team USA. Marner had the assist on Connor McDavid's open shot from the slot, while Matthews was attempting to defend.
It's a moment Auston Matthews would likely want to move on from, but at least one reporter couldn't read the room.
Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star asked Matthews if he regretted not cutting off Marner's pass to McDavid in OT; which brought out the sarcasm in Matthews in full force.
"You were so close to the puck on that pass. Did it haunt you?"
In the end, it feels as though McGran got exactly the answer he deserved in the situation. He tried to smooth it over by laughing and apologizing. It didn't seem like Matthews was biting.
It is believed that Berube also left it up to Matthews and Marner as to whether or not they'd suit up for the first game after the break. Marner on a high, and Matthews not so much, both could not wait to get back into the lineup as both appear to be on a mission with the Leafs down the home stretch in preparation for the playoffs.
