A scout has come forward with a competitive trade proposal that the Detroit Red Wings could submit to the Maple Leafs to pry away veteran Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
The idea came from outside the usual insider loop, yet it landed loudly. Hockey scout Michael Devellano suggested that the Detroit Red Wings could assemble a legitimate trade package to pry Ekman-Larsson away from Toronto, framing the veteran defenseman as an ideal fit for Detroit's blue line.
Devellano's logic starts with value. Ekman-Larsson, 34, has two seasons remaining after this one at a cap hit under $4M per year. For a left shot defender capable of playing second pairing minutes and secondary power play minutes, that contract carries real appeal, especially for teams pushing toward contention.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson's production makes him an attractive asset
The production helps the case. OEL is currently on pace for 14 goals and 51 points, numbers that comfortably exceed expectations for his role. He has added offense without sacrificing structure, logging steady minutes and contributing on the PP when needed.
Detroit's interest makes sense on paper. The Red Wings continue searching for reliable left side help behind their top pair, and Ekman-Larsson's experience and puck movement align with that need. Devellano floated a bold framework, mentioning a first round pick plus young pieces like Jonatan Berggren and Carter Mazur as a starting point.
From a Leafs perspective, this becomes complicated fast. Toronto signed Ekman-Larsson to stabilize the blue line, and he has largely delivered. Trading him would create another hole on defense at a time when injuries and inconsistency already test depth.
As a fan, this idea feels less about shopping Ekman-Larsson and more about pressure points. If Toronto's season stalls or pivots toward asset management, veterans with value and term naturally draw attention. Detroit fits that profile as a motivated buyer with assets to spend.
Any move would signal a clear direction shift. Keeping Ekman-Larsson reinforces a win now approach. Moving him suggests longer-term recalibration, even if the return is strong.
For now, it remains speculation, but it highlights an uncomfortable truth. When contracts outperform expectations, they attract interest. Toronto must decide whether OEL is part of the solution or a valuable chip if bold choices become unavoidable.
