The Maple Leafs have sunk or swam based on the play of their goaltenders this season, but Stolarz and Woll's numbers over the last 30 days tell an ugly story.
Now, with both
Anthony Stolarz and the aforementioned Woll failing to perform at the top of their game, the Leafs find themselves behind the Florida Panthers in the Atlantic Division once again, and the variance in their numbers from February to March doesn't give the fanbase a lot of hope that they'll be able to snap out of it in the final 10 games.
Sportsnet's Luke Fox shared the sobering reality with Leafs fans on social media this week, showcasing a drastic drop off in the quality of Stolarz and Woll's play in March.
Maple Leafs, save percentages:
Anthony Stolarz
February: .925
March: .882
Joseph Woll
February: .921
March: .888
The sudden dip in numbers for Woll and Stolarz also has quite a bit to do with the subpar play of the Leafs' forwards and their defensive corps in recent weeks.
If the phrase "defense wins championships" rings true, the Leafs have a long way to go in a very short amount of time if they want to have any hope of helping their goaltenders to snap out of their recent respective funks before the playoffs, because poor defensive efforts and shaky goaltending could equate to another early exit in a year which the team cannot afford to endure one.
