It wasn't the Leafs or Mitch Marner's camp that leaked discussions around his no-movement clause, but rather another NHL team with significant interest in the pending UFA.

A day after the trade deadline, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed the Leafs asked Mitch Marner to waive his no-movement clause as part of their push to acquire another star forward in Mikko Rantanen from Carolina.
Many believed those reports came from someone in Marner's camp amid his refusal to negotiate in-season.
In his latest article, Simmons revealed that it was the Carolina Hurricanes that leaked the news that Marner was asked to waive his no-movement clause as a way to take the spotlight off of their mishandling of the Rantanen situation.
Marner, according to Simmons, actually weighed the decision over a day, but was unaware of who was involved in the trade and ultimately fell back on his constant reassurance that he wants to be a Leaf for a long time.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that it was the Hurricanes that leaked the information, especially after Pierre LeBrun reported they would be very aggressive in pursuing Marner in the off-season if he reached free agency.
For now, though, the Hurricanes are without a true superstar and the Leafs will hope a long playoff run means that Marner returns to the blue and white next season.
