Steven Lorentz's 7th goal of the season for the Toronto Maple Leafs has a special significance that even Lorentz himself wasn't aware of.
The Maple Leafs were not able to clinch a playoff berth on Sunday with their win over the Anaheim Ducks, but the reason for that is something that, I'm sure, all Leafs fans will be excited about.
The Montreal Canadiens needed to lose to the Florida Panthers on Sunday in order for the Leafs to clinch a playoff spot with a win over the Ducks. However, with the Canadiens beating the Panthers, the Leafs' win gave them a bit of a cushion over last year's Atlantic Division winner.
The game-winner came off the stick of 4th liner Steven Lorentz. Now, the Leafs currently have 94 points to the Panthers and Lightning's 91 points, with both Tampa and Florida holding a game-in-hand.
"I didn't know it was my fourth. Nice to hear," Lorentz said.
"It's no secret what's going on in the standings right now. All these points matter, and we got three big games coming up against the two teams that are in the mix with us. So, those are definitely important games and important points on the line."
The Leafs play the Panthers on Wednesday and again on Monday April 7th, and those two games could very well decide who wins the division crown. Lorentz can certainly attest to how important it is to win the division and give yourself home ice to kick off the playoffs after last year's Stanley Cup win with Florida.
