Report Leaks Official Decision, Confirms Mitch Marner's Fate with the Leafs Ahead of Free Agency

Amid tons of speculation on the future of Mitch Marner, an insider is saying both he and the Toronto Maple Leafs have already decided what's going to happen over the summer.

According to Andy Strickland of the Cam and Strick podcast, the Marner era in Toronto is over. Strickland states he can confirm that Marner won't be back with the Maple Leafs, and both parties are already aware of it.

Strickland made another big revelation while discussing Marner's situation. He says the Maple Leafs front office was all but sure that 2024-25 would be John Tavares' last season in Toronto. However, that changed when it became clear that Marner would not be returning.

The lack of an extension for Marner gives the Maple Leafs another $11 million in salary cap space over the summer, and an opportunity to make a big, team-altering move. There has been lots of chatter about pending free agent Brad Marchand, but a recent report had him well out of the Maple Leafs' range. That may now no longer be the case.

Marner's imminent departure brings the Leafs to a crossroads as the "Core 4" is officially broken up. Replacing Marner's offense won't be easy, but the Maple Leafs now have the bait needed to have a far better chance of landing a big fish in free agency, as they have a prime position open in the top six and the cap space to spend.
