With the Leafs' roster looking incomplete, a recent update from an NHL insider regarding their off-season plans might have the fan base scratching their heads.

Despite the Toronto Maple Leafs carrying extra cap space this summer, replacing Mitch Marner was always going to be a tall task, especially when factoring in the shallow free agent pool.
However, that is clearly not enough firepower to replace Marner's offense or to put themselves in a better spot than they were in last season, and a recent update for NHL insider Greg Wyshnyski wont't help the cause either, as he believes the Leafs could be done making moves this summer.
"I ultimately don't know how philosophically how 'all in' [the Leafs] are gonna be this summer even with the cap space they have; they aren't gonna just spend to spend, at least I don't think that's kinda where Treliving's head is at."
It's certainly not from a lack of trying as Treliving kicked tires on John-Jason
Peterka before he was moved to Utah. He poked around on Jordan Kyrou before his NTC kicked in, and was willing to offer Brock Boeser a massive contract before he returned to Vancouver.
Now, with the free agent landscape and the trade market relatively dry, Treliving has one of two choices; either he tries to force a trade for the sake of change and offers more to get it done or he sits back and enters the season as is, barring a shift in the currents.
Choosing to stand pat might be the better option to retain his valuable trade assets, but they will need Auston Matthews to return to form after an injury-riddled campaign.
Additionally, the Leafs will also need a boost in their secondary scoring from the likes of Maccelli, Max Domi, Scott Laughton, and Nic Roy to alleviate some of the pressure off the top guns. Perhaps this is where Easton Cowan comes in.
Nevertheless, entering the season with $4 million to $5 million in cap space is going to be a change of pace for the Leafs and it should come in handy ahead of the trade deadline, where they could afford to make a couple of bigger moves with the extra funds available.
