The Mitch Marner era in Toronto ended on July 1st, but TSN 1050 OverDrive host Bryan Hayes and Leafs reporter Jonas Siegel believe management should have handled the matter much sooner.

After signing an 8-year extension with the Leafs at the end of June, Mitch Marner was shipped off to the Vegas Golden Knights in return for Nicolas Roy to complete the long-rumoured sign-and-trade for the 28-year-old winger.
During his introductory press conference, Marner revealed that his exit had been two years in the making with the Vegas Golden Knights officially becoming his preferred destination around the trade deadline.
Vegas, however, had reportedly set their sights on Marner as early as last off-season when they attempted to acquire the star forward in a three-way trade.

Brad Treliving and Maple Leafs Called Out for Mismanagement of Situation

The rumours that have surfaced before and after Marner joined Vegas about him wanting out much longer than was originally reported led to a discussion between TSN 'OverDrive' host Bryan Hayes and Leafs reporter Jonas Siegel Monday. Neither were happy about the mismanagement of the entire situation by the Leafs.
"I am curious, I would love to get an answer on what Shanahan and Treliving knew this time last year," said Hayes. "Did they know he was out? You're hearing stories of 'everyone knows. everyone knows he's going to Vegas. If they knew that, then that is significant malpractice. If you're so unhappy, why don't you go ask for a change? Why is it on the Leafs to force your way out?"

In response, Siegel explained that if he and others could see Marner wanted out management should have seen it as well.
"They should have known. If I could see that he was out, how did they not? I actually think they did see it. They knew it wasn't working..."
Leafs Nation, in large part, would agree with Hayes and Siegel that the Leafs mismanaged the situation entirely -- particularly because fans of the Maple Leafs had been asking for a significant change for years and there was plenty of opportunity to make one before his no-movement clause kicked in.
What a mess this entire situation has turned into. Thankfully, it's over now, but it really should have been handled a lot better than it was by not only the Leafs, but by Marner as well.
