P.K. Subban has revived the Mitch Marner drama ahead of tonight's Leafs/Habs game, rubbing some salt in the wounds of Leafs Nation, blaming them for running Marner out of town.

It's been months since Mitch Marner picked up and left Toronto, signing a massive extension with the Vegas Golden Knights earlier this summer as a part of a sign-and-trade that brought the Leafs back centre Nicolas Roy.

P.K. Subban Twists the Knife on Maple Leafs Fans

As the season has worn on, we have heard less and less about the Mitch Marner drama, but unfortunately, P.K. Subban has decided not to let sleeping dogs lie. Subban has revived the drama ahead of tonight's Maple Leafs-Canadiens game.
Back in October of 2024, Subban was a guest on the JD Bunkis Podcast, where he warned Leafs Nation that if they don't treat Marner well, and if they run him out of town, they'll regret it.
Subban re-shared the clip late Friday evening to remind fans that he warned them a year ago that this was coming. This morning, he decided to twist the knife a little bit and kick the Leafs while they're down.
Subban, a former Montreal Canadiens defenseman who hails from Toronto, Ontario, has been outspoken throughout his career and long after, transitioning into more of an analyst role since his NHL retirement.

Subban's Delivery Method May Rub People the Wrong Way

Always opinionated, Subban really doesn't like to let people forget, and while he's probably right about the city's treatment of Marner going a little too far, his delivery methods are sure to rub fans the wrong way, especially those residing in Toronto.
Do the Leafs miss Mitch Marner? I'm sure they do. He was a beloved figure in the locker room, Craig Berube trusted him, and the organization viewed him as a leader. Not only that, but his impact on the ice during the regular season is undeniable.
The team really could use him, especially due to their overall health status right now, missing plenty of key regulars in the lineup. Still, the routine post-season vanishing acts grew old on a fan base who is starved for success. Had Marner elevated his game -- or even just maintained his production -- during the post-season, we likely aren't having this conversation right now.

Subban Trying to Generate Some Clout Before Leafs/Habs Game

Subban is likely just bringing this up now, before the Leafs and Habs getting ready to dance under the bright lights that Hockey Night in Canada provide, to generate some extra attention for himself. Credit where credit is due, it's good branding.
The Leafs are just a couple of games removed from a 5-game losing streak that I'm sure they'd like to forget. Likewise, the Canadiens are currently riding a 5-game losing streak of their own coming into tonight's game.
The last time out, on opening night, the Leafs laid a beating on the Canadiens, and the hope is that they can do it again tonight and quiet some of the chatter from Subban, because while the team may miss Marner now, life will go on, and if the team gets back to their winning ways, nobody will be looking at the past.
