Optimistic Update as Joseph Woll Continues Push Toward Leafs Return

The Maple Leafs received an optimistic update on goaltender Joseph Woll, who continues to push toward a return to the lineup as his recovery progresses.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are now 8-5-1 after a big win against the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday, but questions remain about goaltending and when we might see Joseph Woll return to action.

Injury Trouble Plaguing Maple Leafs to Start the Season

While it is clear the team is lacking scoring depth with the departure of star player Mitch Marner, injuries have also been a significant issue for the Maple Leafs to start the season.

In addition, one player who has not suited up since being placed on leave since September 23rd is goalie Joseph Woll.

However, there appears to be an update as head coach Craig Berube offered encouraging remarks regarding the 27-year old's status moving forward.

As per David Alter on X:

"It's getting close. I don't want to give you a timeline and then it's changed. But I can just say this. He's in a real good spot. It's great to have him out with us in practice and stuff, and he's in a good spot and he's doing well. So it's close."

Maple Leafs Having a Hard Time Replacing Woll During Absence

With Woll on the sidelines, former Montreal Canadiens prospect turned Maple Leaf Cayden Primeau, has taken over the backup role in Toronto.

Despite a respectable 2-1-0 record, Primeau has shown struggles, amassing a 4.30 GAA and 0.838 save percentage -- both lower then league average, and not good enough to maintain a spot at the NHL level.

While Primeau held things together since filling in for Woll, it is clear that Anthony Stolarz misses his tandem partner, as in the past, he has split time with Woll in a 1A - 1B relationship since joining the Leafs, proving to be effective since his arrival.
