The Maple Leafs have placed leading scorer William Nylander on injured reserve, recalling a right-shot defenseman from the Marlies in a corresponding move.
William Nylander was injured on December 27th against the Ottawa Senators, with head coach Craig Berube labelling the skilled forward as day-to-day initially.
Things haven't gone as planned for the Swedish Olympian's recovery, however, as he has since missed the Leafs' last four games, with his injury appearing to have crossed into week-to-week territory.
Nylander Lands on Injured Reserve
The Maple Leafs have placed Nylander on injured reserve retroactive to December 27th. In light of the unfortunate news for Chris Tanev, the Leafs also recalled defenseman Marshall Rifai from the Toronto Marlies in a corresponding move.
According to The Hockey News' Nick Barden, Nylander's placement on injured reserve has nothing to do with his recovery, and is purely a roster management move.
Barden also confirmed that the former first-round pick skated ahead of practice on Monday morning, something head coach Craig Berube was hopeful he would be able to do.
Rifai has yet to play a game for the Leafs this season after undergoing wrist surgery during training camp. He was recently sent down to the Marlies following the completion of his conditioning stint and could make his season debut on Tuesday against the Florida Panthers.
