Most recent report reveals a crucial update on the evolving situation between the Maple Leafs and Max Pacioretty.
For a few weeks now, the Maple Leafs have been linked to unrestricted free agent forward Max Pacioretty, with reports ranging from Pacioretty potentially signing a PTO in Toronto or perhaps even a standard player contract.
On Monday, TSN's Darren Dreger discussed what may happen between Pacioretty and the Leafs, mentioning that his fate may be directly tied to that of Nick Robertson, who remains unsigned a little over a week away from the start of training camp. If Robertson signs, Pacioretty could still end up in Toronto, but in more of a professional tryout scenario. Conversely, if Robertson holds out and does not attend training camp, Pacioretty could find himself with an actual contract with the Leafs.
"Toronto has a history of bringing in older players like this. It hasn't really worked, but they've brought in good players. I think of [Jason] Spezza, I think of Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau. Go down the list of the older players that do help shepherd in some of the core of this group... but is Max Pacioretty going to be okay with limited ice if he can't fill the role that he needs to be able to play?
I'd say it's 'to be determined' still, but I do know the Toronto Maple Leafs have interest in at least bringing him in on a PTO, no promises, no guarantees, but Pacioretty also has interest in other teams in the National Hockey League, so we'll have to see how this plays out."
Pacioretty suited up in just 47 games for the Washington Capitals last season, producing 23 points, which is very respectable for a player who has missed as much time as he has in recent years.
As Dreger mentioned, Pacioretty's role, if he does sign in Toronto, would be much more of a mentorship role, but he'll still be relied upon to produce some secondary offense. Of course, his health is the main concern here and if the Leafs have any doubts in his ability to play the majority of this season, it might make more sense to take a pass and allow for some internal options to receive a bit more of an opportunity to show what they can contribute.
