New graphic shows how much trouble the Maple Leafs are really in this season

Following a 6-game run in which the Maple Leafs collected 10 of a possible 12 points, going 4-0-2, a dismal effort against the Edmonton Oilers has zapped any good faith they may have built up with the fan base.

Not only that, but the 6-3 loss keeps the team 4 points out of a Wild Card spot as we inch our way towards the midway point of the season.

Each year, Money Puck creates a pie chart showing every team's chances of qualifying for the playoffs. On Sunday, they shared an updated graphic, which shows the Leafs at a 21.8% likelihood to qualify for the playoffs.

So much of the team's struggles this season can be attributed, at least in part, to the sudden decline of Auston Matthews, who sits well below the point-per-game mark with just 21 points in 26 games this season.

Matthews does hold a share of the team's lead with 13 goals, but there's no question that the Arizona product is making a lot less of an impact in games over these past two seasons that he has in the past.

Another issue the Leafs have faced is the significant number of injuries they've been forced to endure. Injuries to players like Matthews himself, as well as Chris Tanev, Matthew Knies, William Nylander, Brandon Carlo, Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll.

After shipping Mitch Marner off to the Vegas Golden Knights this summer, the team has also missed one of their most versatile players, not only at 5v5, but on the penalty kill and the power play.

The season is not over yet. The Leafs have plenty of time to turn things around and right the ship, but make no mistake, the runway is shrinking, and if the plane fails to take off, the Leafs won't even have the opportunity to choke in the playoffs. They won't make the postseason at all.
