Darren Ferris confirms what he would have wanted Mitch Marner to have done heading into free agency, and it would have left Toronto empty-handed.

With all the hoopla surrounding former Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner after his recent comments about him fearing for his safety, his agent added a little bit more to the story during his recent interview with John Shannon and Darren Millard on the 100% Hockey Podcast.
Darren Ferris is known to be a tough negotiator and someone who is always going to be looking to maximize his client's value, even if it doesn't come off as genuine. However, it became very clear to all involved, that Marner had played his last game in Toronto, and his next steps were to be determined.
Just based on some of the comments that he made after the sign-and-trade went through, it was clear Marner wanted to go to Vegas and Vegas alone. He had spoken to some of the players and was even looking at houses in the area, which Ferris essentially confirms.
"He heard directly from other players about Vegas and how they treat the players and their families too. And once he knew that, his mind was made up at the end of the season."

However, Ferris had other ideas, and was reportedly hoping that he could have taken his client to free agency, rather than having the sign-and-trade go through, and potentially thumbing his nose to Toronto one final time.
"From my perspective as an agent, I would have preferred him to go through the full process, sit down with multiple teams, and explore every option. But for him, it was clear he didn't want to go through that 'dog and pony show' or go to free agency when he already knew where he wanted to be."

The poignant agent then mentioned how safety for his family was of the utmost importance, bringing up the controversial topic that has made it's rounds on social media this past week.
"Safety for his family and being in the right environment mattered most. My job at that point was simply to support his decision and help him get there."

Had Ferris gotten his way, Marner would have walked into free agency, and Toronto would have been left empty-handed, rather than at least recouping Nicolas Roy. It's safe to say that both Ferris and Marner will be regarded in a negative light for the foreseeable future and their current media tour has only made things worse.
