The Toronto Maple Leafs are gearing up to have what could be the most expensive offseason in franchise history. General manager Kyle Dubas will have to resign both Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner first and foremost, along with some other cheaper pieces. Darren Ferris, Mitch Marner's agent, told TSN's Pierre LeBrun that that it's 100% Marner will not sign a contract during the season. Marner's team is actually waiting to see how much Matthews will get paid and base their negotiations after that. It's a pretty good strategy considering there's a high probability that Marner leads the team in points for the second year in a row. His team will then be able to ask "Who's more valuable to the team?".Suddenly signing Marner for $8million a season doesn't seem possible. If Dubas can't somehow manage to pull off a miracle and get both Matthews and Marner to sign team friendly deals, it's likely that Kasperi Kapanen and another core piece could be moved.
