Mitch Marner and his agent Darren Ferris have attempted to play the victim card, but the Maple Leafs have revealed the truth about his security concerns.
Ahead of his first season as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights, Mitch Marner attended Team Canada's orientation camp in Calgary this past week.
Marner ultimately blamed the negativity from fans and security concerns as the reason for his departure, citing an incident following the Leafs' Game 7 loss to the Florida Panthers this year.
According to Marner, he required security to watch his home for two weeks following the Leafs' elimination as someone posted his address on social media.
The Maple Leafs Have Debunked Mitch Marner's Safety Concerns
"The Leafs, doing their diligence, looked into the situation with Marner, who was still their property at the time," wrote Simmons. "Their security people did the same as part of their regular employment. They found nothing to be concerned about. They wonder now about the veracity of all that is being told."
Simmons' reporting confirms what many in Leafs Nation suspected when Marner first shared his version of events, in that
he once again failed to take accountability for his shortcomings as a leader, or admit that he just couldn't handle the spotlight that is Toronto.
Instead, the former first-round pick decided to take one last parting shot at Leafs Nation, blaming their supposed actions as the main reason why he wanted out of Toronto.
Many were quick to point out the contradiction in Marner blaming fans for his departure and his comments during his introductory press conference in Vegas where he noted that he was asking players around the league as far back as mid-February about life in Vegas.
As he won't make his return to Toronto until January, fans of the Leafs will surely be bottling up their discontent with their former star until then, when he will likely be showered with a chorus of boos when he takes to the ice at Scotiabank Arena.
