Defensive stability may finally be trending upward for the Maple Leafs as Brandon Carlo was spotted back on the ice following foot surgery.
Earlier this month, Leafs blueliner Brandon Carlo underwent surgery on his foot after an injury stalled what had already been a difficult start to his 2025-26 season. On Tuesday, he was back on the ice for the first time, along with Dakota Mermis, a meaningful step forward even if a return to game action is not yet imminent.
The timing matters. Toronto's defensive depth has been stretched to its limits, and the absence of a true stay at home presence has been glaring during extended defensive zone sequences. Carlo's size, reach, and penalty killing utility are exactly what this group has been missing.
Carlo, 29, arrived last season with expectations of being a stabilizer, but his early individual results did not reflect his résumé. His reads were occasionally late, and his puck movement under pressure struggled as he adjusted to a new system and new partners.
Even so, the Leafs always viewed him as a longer-term fit rather than a quick fix. His career track record suggests reliability in heavy minutes, especially against top competition and net front threats.
Brandon Carlo recovery brings hope to the Maple Leafs' defense
From a fan perspective, this is one of those quiet updates that feels bigger than it sounds. The Leafs have been begging for predictability on the back end, and Carlo represents a chance to calm games down structurally.
Skating again does not mean immediate help, but it does signal progress. Foot injuries can linger, and the organization will be cautious, especially given how much they need Carlo healthy rather than rushed.
When he returns, Carlo's role will likely be simplified. Win battles, protect the slot, clear rebounds, and let puck movers handle transitions. That clarity could help him rediscover the form that made him a dependable defender earlier in his career.
Toronto's defensive issues have not been about effort alone. Gaps, missed assignments, and fatigue have compounded over weeks, exposing a lack of dependable options. Carlo's presence helps address that imbalance.
This does not erase his early struggles, nor does it guarantee a turnaround. But for a Leafs team searching for stability, seeing Carlo back on skates is a genuine positive.
Sometimes progress starts with something small. For Toronto's blue line, this might be the first step toward breathing room.
