Ben Danford, the Maple Leafs' top prospect, is a fierce competitor, and this week, he shared a clear, concise message with Team USA ahead of the World Juniors.
It was a long road to get here, but Maple Leafs prospect Ben Danford has played his way onto Team Canada with other world class junior players, and has a chance to compete for a gold medal at the 2026 World Junior Championship tournament.
Danford says Canada wants to be recognized as "dream killers" at this year's WJC tournament
Danford and a handful of other NHL prospects and future draftees spoke with the media this week about what they hope to accomplish in this tournament, but Danford was quick to establish that this year's team want to be "dream killers".
"Going into the States and stuff, obviously them winning back-to-back golds, you know, kind of just being dream killers. You know, go in there, do our job and get gold."
Team Canada captain Porter Martone revealed that the "dream killer" moniker came from Canada's U-18 World Championships coach Gardiner MacDougall, and this group plans to carry that mindset into Minneapolis for this U-20 tournament.
For Danford, he's a fierce competitor, and thrives with the physical side of the game. He has the ability to not only punish the opposing team physically, but also shut them down defensively and contribute some secondary offense when the opportunity to do so arises.
Danford has really seen a spike in his offensive production this season since being traded to the Brantford Bulldogs. The former Oshawa Generals captain already has 12 points in 15 games for the Bulldogs, also registering 4 points in 8 games with the Generals before the trade. His 16 points in 23 games has him on pace to smash his OHL career high of 33 points back in 2023-24.
The Leafs have not had a multi-tool defender with an upside like what Danford possesses in quite some time. While Jake McCabe and Jake Muzzin both do/did possess some of those traits, there's little doubt that the 19-year-old Danford's potential is higher.
If Danford can play a pivotal role in helping Canada secure gold at these World Juniors, it could really rocket him up the team's depth chart in a hurry, potentially even forcing his way into the conversation for a roster spot next fall at training camp.
