If Maple Leafs top prospect Easton Cowan breaks Doug Gilmour's OHL record, it reportedly won't be recognized as an official record.

The Toronto Maple Leafs went off the board when they selected Easton Cowan with the 28th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. But, while some didn't appear too excited about the pick at the time, everyone is quickly coming around on the 19-year-old star.

In an exciting turn of events, Cowan has extended his incredible point streak to 51 games, the longest stretch since 2000, surpassing the previous record of 50 games. Next in his sights? Doug Gilmour's 55-game point streak record.

Now, even though he's been on a tear and on the verge of breaking Doug Gilmour's CHL all-time consecutive game points record of 55 games, it may not count.

You see, Cowan's point streak began on November 24, 2023, and because of this, the league may not consider the original streak (since the year 2000) of 50 games, held by Alexander Radulov, who played for the QMJHL's Quebec Remparts, to remain intact. So, as of today, Gilmour's all-time record scoring streak of 55 games appears to be safe.

While Cowan will be unable to break the record stretched over two seasons, it is still possible for him to break the record, as the London Knights have 49 games left in their season. Ultimately, Cowan would have to continue his streak for the remainder of the season to etch his name in the record books, but it's still possible.

While it's unknown whether Cowan will pan out at the professional level, it has been fun for Knights fans, as well as Leafs fans, to watch him flourish at the OHL level.

This could be a precursor of things to come for the youngster, but like everything, the Maple Leafs' faithful should continue to have cautious optimism as Cowan does appear to have all of the tools and the work ethic to be a successful NHL player.

Whatever happens with Cowan and the potential record, everyone should take a step back and marvel at the fact that we are living in a time where a record, unofficially or not, has the potential to be broken, and that's pretty darn exciting.
