The Maple Leafs made a surprising roster move on Tuesday, placing a 22-year-old forward on waivers for the purposes of a contract termination.

Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving continues to filter out prospects drafted by Kyle Dubas as he puts his stamp on the organization with another move on Tuesday afternoon.
Once considered a steal in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Ty Voit was coming off of an 80-point season with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL. The following season, Voit looked like he was indeed a steal, racking up 105 points in just 67 games, again with the Sting.
Voit signed his entry-level contract months after he was drafted, but when he finally made the leap from junior to the pros, injury troubles caught up to him.
The 22-year-old was injured in the rookie tournament ahead of training camp in 2023, only to return and miss the remainder of the season after suffering a shoulder injury minutes into his Toronto Marlies debut.
After a nightmare first pro season, Voit has been unable to crack the Marlies roster and spent last season in the ECHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones where he was fairly productive tallying 37 points in 63 games.
Without a clear path to a full-time spot on the Marlies and being a smaller forward, it would appear the Leafs and Voit have agreed to part ways.

Ty Voit Looking to Continue His Career Outside of the Maple Leafs Organization

Tuesday saw the Leafs place Voit on unconditional waivers for the purposes of contract termination, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Given that Voit was drafted by Kyle Dubas and that he is a Pittsburgh native, it wouldn't come as a surprise to see him join the Penguins as they look to restock the prospect cupboards and prepare for the inevitable rebuild when Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin retire.
It's unfortunate that Voit never got a real opportunity in Toronto given his skillset, but injuries delayed and derailed his development and took away any opportunity he may have had to become a full-time AHLer in Toronto at the very least.
