The Vegas Golden Knights have done it again. After effectively luring Mitch Marner out of Toronto, the Golden Knights have now swooped in and snatched up the Leafs' top trade target, pulling off a trade for Rasmus Andersson.
After fielding offers and holding discussions with multiple teams, including the Leafs, the Calgary Flames completed a Sunday night blockbuster, shipping out Andersson for a fairly stacked return, given the fact that the Golden Knights did not receive an extension for Andersson as a part of the deal.
Golden Knights Undercut Leafs, Bruins, Others With Andersson Deal
This move came together quickly following reports that the Boston Bruins were closing the gap and appeared to be the favourites to acquire the skilled Swedish defenseman.
The trade call is currently pending, but according to The Fourth Period's Dave Pagnotta, there is no contract extension as part of the deal. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman also revealed that the deal does contain 50% salary retention on the Flames' part to keep the Golden Knights cap compliant.
Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, the lack of their first round picks may have been the difference here, as Vegas is parting with not one, but potentially two of them in the deal.
Now, with Andersson to Vegas in the process of being finalized, the Leafs must turn their attention to their next target, which may very well be New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton. That deal won't happen, however, without the Leafs and Devils playing some serious cap gymnastics.
