Maple Leafs' Latest Decision Has Major Implications for the Stanley Cup Playoffs

So much of the recent discussion in Toronto has surrounded what the Leafs plan to do with their goaltending tandem come playoff time.

Originally, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube had told the media that he plans to select one starting goalie to run with for the playoffs. It didn't mean that the decision would be an easy one, but it appeared like the most likely course of action, rather than running a tandem in the post-season.

Earlier this week, however, Berube's comments made it seem like he was open to the idea of continuing on with a goaltending rotation in the playoffs -- at least enough to want to have a discussion about it. But that was then, and this is now.

The Leafs are believed to have selected their starting goaltender for tonight's Eastern Conference clash with the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are fighting for their playoff lives.

This one is expected to be a hard-fought battle, and according to NHL.com's Dave A. McCarthy, the Leafs appear to be turning to Anthony Stolarz once again, marking back-to-back starts for the Stanley Cup winner after a thrilling 3-2 win over his former Panthers on Wednesday.

This decision could signify that the Leafs are leaning towards having Stolarz start in Game 1 of the playoffs, as JD Bunkis and Sam McKee alluded to on Leafs Talk earlier this week, after their victory over the Panthers.

The Leafs currently hold a 3-point lead in the Atlantic Division with just 7 games remaining for them and their two closest competitors, Tampa Bay and Florida. The Panthers are playing in Ottawa tonight, while the Lightning face off against the Sabres in Buffalo.
