It's been a whirlwind of a season for William Nylander, who entered the first year of an 8-year deal worth a staggering $92 million in 2024-25.
Not only has Nylander lived up to the deal he signed in the 1st year -- he may have exceeded expectations with his improved 2-way play and increased goal production. The veteran winger has produced a career-high in goals this season, and still has two games left on the schedule to continue to pad his stats.
The Calgary-born Swede had a month of March to remember, producing 8 goals and 20 points, which has helped put the Leafs in a position to secure home ice in Round 1 and potentially even win the Atlantic Division for the first time in franchise history.
To that end, the Leafs announced this morning that Nylander has been honoured as the Molson Cup First Star for the month of March.
Nylander has been one of the Leafs' most consistent players all season long, and he also happens to be one of their most consistent playoff performers as well.
There is a lot riding on this year's playoff run, especially with Mitch Marner and John Tavares coming to the end of their respective deals with free agency looming. Matthew Knies is also a restricted free agent and is susceptible to a potential offer sheet this summer. To say the stakes are high is an understatement.
Nylander leads the team in goals with 45 on the season and sits 2nd on the team with 84 points behind only Mitch Marner, who has accumulated 99 points on the year. Still, even in a career year, Nylander has dismissed his individual stats and remains focused on the playoffs.
Congratulations to Nylander. I'm sure it's nice to see the hard work and solid production being acknowledged and rewarded.
