Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has opened up about the cultural and stylistic changes the organization is working to establish in pursuit of a winning formula.
As the Toronto Maple Leafs prepare for a new season and players begin to return to their cities for training camp, the focus remains on embracing the style of play that head coach Craig Berube and GM Brad Treliving have emphasized, since joining the organization.
"I think one of the things (head coach) Craig (Berube) really instilled was playing behind people, being harder to play against at both nets, and that was the focus of our whole coaching staff throughout the year."
"We're fortunate to have world-class players, and I wouldn't say it's been a hard sell at all. The thing that we're fortunate about is that our top guys are also our hardest-working guys. They put in the most time, they work at their craft the hardest, they lead the way by example"
Treliving also stressed that while successful teams may look different in execution, the foundation of winning hockey is always the same.
"At the end of the day, you look at Florida and the teams that have had success, every team has different nuances, but the recipe doesn't change a whole lot."
The Leafs' stars have embraced their more defensively responsible roles under Berube, and that commitment has trickled down the lineup.
With the additions of Nicolas Roy, Dakota Joshua, and Michael Pezzetta -- players known for their defensive awareness and hard-nosed style -- the team has further reinforced its new identity.
