Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving weighs in on Auston Matthews' first year as Captain, and his comments about Matthews' perceived struggles were very direct.
As the Toronto Maple Leafs wrap up the regular season, finishing first in the Atlantic Division, it's time to reflect on how individual players performed -- especially the star players on the team.
One name that stands out, but perhaps not in the usual way, is Auston Matthews. On paper, Matthews had what many would call a "down year," going from a remarkable 69-goal campaign last season to just 33 goals this year.
But Leafs GM Brad Treliving had a different take when asked about Matthews' performance in his first season as team captain.
As per Mark Masters on X:
"We can say, okay, his goal scoring may be down. I think his overall game is as good as I've ever seen it ... how we have to check & play 200 feet, he's set the standard for us."
While Matthews' goal total may have dipped, he was still on pace for a 95-point season over 82 games. Injuries limited him to just 67 games this year, as he battled through an upper-body issue for much of the 2024-25 campaign.
He's shown poise with the media, holding both himself and teammates accountable, while consistently voicing his confidence in this group heading into the post-season.
Now, the ultimate test of his leadership lies ahead. The playoffs will be the true proving ground, not only for Matthews as captain, but for the growth of this team under head coach Craig Berube's leadership as well.
