The Maple Leafs have provided fans with a realistic timeline for when we might see top defensive prospect Ben Danford playing in the NHL.
It seems the Maple Leafs' development staff remains highly optimistic about what Ben Danford can bring to the organization, and more importantly, when he'll be able to bring it.
The excitement around the Oshawa Generals captain hasn't slowed since being drafted by the Maple Leafs in 2024. Expectations for his impact are growing, and Mark Leach, the Leafs' head of scouting, is adamant that Danford could make a difference in the not-too-distant future.
His strong playoff performance only reinforced that belief, a promising sign for both player and team. Still, despite making a strong impression, it's almost a certainty that Danford won't crack the NHL roster this year.
The leap to the professional level is steep, faster, more physical, and far more demanding as the skill ceiling is infinitely higher. While the Maple Leafs are confident he has the tools to adapt, Leach has stressed that it's not a transition that happens instantly.
"He is a young man who needs time and maturity to play in the pro game. It doesn't happen overnight. You are asking a 19- or 20-year-old to play against men. It is hard. If it were easy, everybody would be doing it."
If developed with patience and some good timing, Danford could ultimately grow into the role currently filled by Chris Tanev, once the veteran inevitably ages out. Danford's defensive instincts, size, and patient style of play align perfectly with Craig Berube's system, making him a potential long-term fit on the Leafs' blueline. Leach did caution, though, that it could take some time.
"He could take a year, or two, or three. We will just see how he does when he gets there."
The Leafs have long lacked a young, right-shot defenceman with size who can play a responsible, defensive-first game. If Danford reaches his potential, Toronto could finally have the type of homegrown piece that teams like Dallas have leaned on to remain competitive. Think of Thomas Harley as a recent example.
While Danford won't be ready immediately, and he already know this, look for the young Leafs defenseman to continue to make improvements year over year until he ultimately gives the team no other choice but to give him his opportunity.
