Latest news on Toronto Maple Leafs forward David Kampf is a good indicator that a trade is incoming sooner than later for the frustrated veteran.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have started off their 2025-26 campaign in very lacklustre way, sitting at 6-5-1 to start the year. To put that into perspective, if the season were to end today, the Maple Leafs would miss the playoffs.

David Kampf Situation Hits Boiling Point

One player who has started of the season just as slow as the Maple Leafs is disgruntled veteran David Kampf. Kampf failed to make the Maple Leafs out of camp and was waived sent down to their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.
Disappointingly, Kampf has yet to find his groove, amassing only 1 assist in 4 AHL games.
Thankfully for Kampf, the situation appears to be trending towards a fairly imminent resolution.
As per Elliotte Friedman, shared by Lance Hornby on X:
"Reporting tonight that a frustrated David Kampf did not join the Marlies on their trip to Chicago and could be moved. One assist in four games since clearing waivers. He has a $2.4 million US cap hit."
This situation has really backed the Leafs into a corner as Kampf's latest actions likely reduce his trade value even further, putting the team in a position of weakness in any trade negotiations.

What's Next for David Kampf

Over the last couple of seasons, Kampf has been the subject of much trade speculation, especially since being sent down to the AHL.
A trade would likely be the best scenario for both sides, as Kampf can still prove that he is a capable NHL player, while the Maple Leafs could shred his $2.4M per season cap hit.
For Kampf, it appears as though he's ready for this stretch of his career to be over, as he doesn't view himself as an AHL player. He believes he can play in the NHL and should be there now, which has really put him on tilt.

Maple Leafs' Next Steps

The Maple Leafs are coming off of a strong 5-2 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. They will next gear up against the 8-3-2 Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night, where they will look to build on the victory.
