Maple Leafs Face Trade Dilemma as Rival Teams Target Top Prospect
The Maple Leafs are facing a dilemma when it comes to trades assets that teams are asking for, with one prospect being untouchable, and another's value in question.
For the Toronto Maple Leafs, the struggles, at least on paper, seem to be fading. The team has managed to steady itself in the standings, but watching them play tells a different story.
The Leafs still look one top-six forward short of being a real contender, but acquiring one doesn't appear to be as easy as it seems.
With limited assets and little cap flexibility, the reality is simple: any meaningful trade would come at a cost. And right now, that cost is beginning to look like
Easton Cowan, given how interested rival teams are.
The 20-year-old from Mount Brydges, Ontario, who was drafted 28th overall in the 2023 draft by the Maple Leafs, has quietly been one of the Leafs' most dynamic players.
Through 10 games, he's managed a goal and four points, but the numbers don't nearly tell the full story.
His speed, hockey IQ, and dynamic play have been bright spots in a lineup that's often lacked energy. It's not easy to find a player that young who can push play forward and still stay defensively responsible.
Yet even with his upside, it wouldn't come as a shock if Toronto used him as a trade chip. The team is built to win now, and Cowan might be one of the few prospects with enough value to bring back a legitimate top-six winger. Quite the dilemma.
A Short-Term Gamble vs. Long-Term Stability
Moving Cowan might help the Leafs in the immediate future, but history isn't kind to teams that trade away homegrown talent too quickly.
The organization has often lacked long-term vision, and moving on from a player like Cowan could be another short-sighted move in a long line of them.
The better option might be to part with a roster player or the few remaining draft picks rather than sacrificing a prospect with genuine potential.
Ben Danford is rumoured to be more available than Cowan, but the problem with that idea is that teams are not sure of his long-term projection. Some believe he can develop into a top-4 NHL defenseman while others disagree and see him as more of a third pairing option.
For once, the Leafs should resist the urge to chase a quick fix and focus on building something sustainable, because in a few years, Easton Cowan might be exactly the kind of player the Leafs keep trying to trade for.
