The Columbus Blue Jackets dealt disgruntled winger Patrik Laine to a long-standing divisional rival of the Maple Leafs in the Montreal Canadiens.
Patrik Laine requested a trade out of Columbus and although it took some time, he finally got his wish as the Blue Jackets traded the 26-year-old to the Montreal Canadiens along with a 2026 second-round pick for defenseman Jordan Harris.
Laine has 2 years remaining on his current deal that comes with an $8.7M cap hit of which the Habs will be taking on the full amount.
Last season, Laine entered the player assistance program in January which put any trade involving him on hold, but now that he is no longer in the program, the trade was able to take place. Laine played in just 18 games last season as he dealt with a shoulder injury and then entered the NHL, NHLPA's players assistance program. In those 18 games, he posted 6 goals and 9 points. The one-time 40+ goal-scorer will add an another shooting threat to an offense that already includes Cole Caufield and playmakers like Nick Suzuki.
