Chris Tanev has been sidelined since the start of November, but the Maple Leafs have confirmed the date on which he is expected to be re-evaluated.
Taken off on a stretcher after an awkward collision against the Philadelphia Flyers at the beginning of November, it has been a long recovery for rugged defenceman Chris Tanev.
Tanev had been skating by himself and then with other injured Leafs for a few weeks, but Saturday marked a major shift for the undrafted defenceman.
The 35-year-old joined his teammates for practice for the first time since his injury. Although it was in a non-contact jersey, it was a major marker of progress to return to the lineup.
Leafs announce Tanev to be evaluated this week
Following an optional practice on Sunday, head coach Craig Berube revealed that their most reliable defenceman will be evaluated on Wednesday.
"He feels good. He's skating, working hard. But we'll have to see when he gets looked at on Wednesday."
If things go well on Wednesday when Tanev meets with doctors, the Leafs should have a better idea of what his timeline for return looks like. Given the recent concussion history, however, it wouldn't come as a surprise to see Tanev held out until the Christmas break.
