The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced the hiring of a new assistant coach, bypassing Bruce Boudreau in favour of Marlies assistant coach Steve Sullivan.

The Maple Leafs confirmed Friday they have hired Steve Sullivan as an assistant coach, officially filling the opening created by the firing of Marc Savard. Rather than look outside the organization, Toronto turned inward, promoting Sullivan from the Toronto Marlies to join Craig Berube's NHL staff.
Some have suggested that the team should have given former Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau some strong consideration for the role after it was reported that the Leafs were the only team he'd consider joining as an assistant, but this move seems to eliminate that possibility.
The move reinforces a pattern the Leafs have leaned on throughout this season. After parting ways with Savard, management signaled a preference for continuity and familiarity, and Sullivan fits that approach cleanly. He already understands organizational systems, development priorities, and the players moving between the AHL and NHL.

Former NHLer Steve Sullivan a quality hire by the Maple Leafs

Sullivan, 50, brings credibility that extends beyond coaching. He played more than 1,000 NHL games and scored 290 career goals, carving out a reputation as a smart, competitive winger. Since retiring, he has built coaching experience with the Marlies, working closely with young forwards and skill development.
Toronto's decision also reflects timing. The Leafs have navigated injuries, special teams inconsistency, and mounting pressure to stabilize performance. Installing a coach already embedded in the organization avoids the disruption that often comes with an external hire midseason.
From a fan perspective, this feels like a practical move rather than a headline grabber. Berube brings structure and accountability, while Sullivan adds familiarity and communication, especially for players bouncing between levels. That balance matters during a season where confidence and clarity have been tested.
The Leafs have not detailed Sullivan's exact responsibilities yet, but his background points toward offensive support, forward usage, and day to day bench management. Those areas remain under the microscope as Toronto looks for consistency rather than reinvention.
This hire does not promise an instant turnaround, but it does signal belief in internal solutions. Toronto is choosing stability over noise, trust over experimentation.
As the season continues, Sullivan's presence will be judged less by titles and more by results. For now, the Leafs have made it clear they are betting on continuity to steady the room and push forward.
