Maple Leafs prospect Luke Haymes may find himself moving up the depth chart after an impressive showing at the Leafs' Rookie Showcase in Montreal.
With the rookie showcase now complete, some prospects have left lasting impressions on their organizations, while others struggled to stand out.
For 22-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Luke Haymes, the tournament was a resounding success. Not only did he draw consistent praise throughout, but he may have been the most noticeable Leaf on the ice.
"Haymes finished with two goals and two assists, making him one of the top-producing Maple Leafs prospects, alongside Kirwan, at the Prospect Showdown this weekend."
Luke Haymes' Strong Play Highlights His Potential NHL Readiness
Haymes capped off his tournament in style, winning a key faceoff on the power play that led directly to an assist, to go a long with blasting home a one-timer to showcase his elite shot, nabbing another 2 points to end the tournament.
The forward is coming off a strong season with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL, following his signing out of the NCAA. In just nine games, he posted six points, displaying both offensive creativity and responsible two-way play.
While Haymes has proven he's inching closer to NHL readiness, the real test will come at the team's main training camp. He'll need to out-battle several players ahead of him on the depth chart to earn a roster spot. Even if he doesn't crack the lineup immediately, he's positioned himself well to be among the first call-ups should injuries strike next season.
