Long-time Leafs commentator Joe Bowen is hoping to end his career with a Stanley Cup, but appeared to poke some fun at the Leafs' long-time Cup drought on Friday.
For more than 40 years, Bowen has been the voice of the Maple Leafs. He has been a part of all of the jubilation and the disappointment. Unfortunately, this past June, the 74-year-old
announced this would be his final season.
Leafs to Honour Bowen in December
"Nobody represents the passion of Leafs Nation better than Joe Bowen and his signature voice has been the soundtrack for so many iconic moments for the team over the past 44 years," said Brad Treliving at the time of the announcement. "We look forward to celebrating Joe all season but especially making December 16 a very special tribute to the man known as the 'voice of the Maple Leafs'."
Bowen Pokes Fun at Maple Leafs' Stanley Cup Drought
On Friday, Bowen made an appearance on 'Leafs Morning Take' where host Nick Alberga asked him if he believed the Leafs would send him off with a Stanley Cup.
In response, the 44-year commentator laughed before poking fun at their 58-year Cup drought.
"I'm going to get t-shirts made up that simply say, 'Win One Before I'm F***ing Done'...It would be a crowning moment. It would be great. I can't dream it anymore than we have, I suppose."
Off to a 5-5-1 start, the Leafs have a ton of work to do to send Bowen riding off into the sunset. Despite the hilarious t-shirt idea, Bowen is hopeful he will be able to sign off from his final game while watching the Leafs hoist their first Stanley Cup since 1967.
Whether it has been on the radio or television, Bowen has always brought his passion to his work and created many memories for generations of Leafs Nation with his trademark 'Holy Mackinaw' catch-phrase.
