The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly in the market for a defenseman and The Fourth Period believes that the Anaheim Ducks may have the answer for them.

An already depleted Maple Leafs blueline took yet another hit on Saturday when defenseman Jake McCabe left the game against the Montreal Canadiens with an injury and was unable to return.
Following the loss, Maple Leafs bench boss Craig Berube revealed that he had no update on McCabe and what his timeline is for return, and with Brandon Carlo and Chris Tanev already sidelined, the Leafs are running out of bodies on the blueline.
If the Leafs are serious about turning their season around, they can't bank on Dakota Mermis, Philippe Myers and Troy Stecher to play meaningful minutes every night. They need to find a solution, and fast.

Pavel Mintyukov wants out in Anaheim, and the Leafs are a natural fit

Fortunately, their need for a defenseman coincides with a trade request from young Anaheim Ducks defenseman Pavel Mintyukov, who wants out of California due to being leapfrogged on the Ducks' depth chart.
The Fourth Period revealed on Sunday that the Leafs are one of at least 5 teams who "could have varying levels of interest in Mintyukov".
Mintyukov was a former 10th overall pick by the Ducks in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, and while he is just 21 years old, the Moscow native already has 150 games of NHL experience under his belt.

A deal for Mintyukov will not come cheap

If the Leafs are serious about potentially acquiring the 6-foot-1-inch defender, they're going to have to part with some serious assets to even enter the bidding war. Their 2028 1st round pick would almost certainly be on the table, and there's a good chance that the Ducks would also demand 2024 1st round pick Ben Danford -- a right-shot defenseman with a serious mean streak.
Would that be enough to acquire Mintyukov? It seems unlikely. The Leafs may also have to add the suddenly surging California native Nick Robertson to the mix, and perhaps another piece.
Mintyukov has amassed 9 goals and 41 assists for a total of 50 points in this, his 3rd season. The 207-pound, left-shot defenseman has registered just 3 assists so far through 19 games this season.
