Leafs Miss Out on Another Deadline Target as Kyle Dubas Swings Deal Involving Bunting and Schenn

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been biding their time and approaching this trade deadline a lot more slowly and methodically than some, but so far, it has cost them a number of trade targets to whom they were previously linked.

A few weeks ago, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman had reported that the Leafs were among the teams interested in acquiring both Brayden and and Luke Schenn. Now, however, it does not appear as though that's going to happen, as Kyle Dubas has swooped in and nabbed Luke Schenn from the Nashville Predators.

Per Friedman, the Preds have sent Schenn, along with Tommy Novak to the Penguins in exchange for former Maple Leaf Michael Bunting. Dubas also dealt defenseman Vincent Desharnais to the San Jose Sharks for a 5th round pick.

The Leafs have a day and a half now with which to scour the market for upgrades in the middle six and bottom pairing, and while they won't be able to unite the Schenn brothers in Toronto, they still may land a pretty big fish in Blues captain Brayden Schenn.

The Leafs are also believed to be tracking the Mikko Rantanen situation in Carolina, with the Hurricanes reportedly reaching out to teams to begin preliminary discussions about potentially flipping Rantanen for the right price.
