Budding, young Maple Leafs star Matthew Knies had a funny reaction and a wild suggestion after Alex Ovechkin's 895th career goal, which broke Gretzky's NHL record.

By now, I'm sure everyone is well aware of the fact that the NHL has a brand new all-time goals leader, with Alex Ovechkin scoring his 895th career NHL goal on Sunday, moving one past Wayne Gretzky's previous record of 894 goals, which Ovechkin had tied just one game prior.
Auston Matthews was among the first NHL stars to publicly offer up words of encouragement, congratulations and admiration to Ovechkin after accomplishing the, at one-time, unthinkable feat. Now, another Leaf has shared his thoughts on the incredible career milestone and historic tally itself.

Matthew Knies Shares His Initial Reaction to Alex Ovechkin's Record-Setting 895th Career Goal

Sophomore Matthew Knies was made available to speak after Leafs practice on Monday, ahead of the upcoming Florida road trip, and he was asked about Ovechkin's incredible record-breaking goal, among others things. Here's what he had to say about the historic goal.
"It's pretty incredible... it's astonishing, honestly. It was fun to watch the celebration after and how the crowd got into it in an away game, it was pretty cool," Knies said, before chirping himself for his suspect counting skills and suggesting that perhaps Auston Matthews can one day break Ovechkin's record.

"Yeah, I mean, that's pretty crazy. Obviously, I can't even count that high. That's pretty astonishing, but yeah, maybe -- we'll see down the line if 34 can do it."
Auston Matthews is currently on pace to pass Ovechkin, depending on how many more Ovi puts up, but that depends entirely on his health and how long he can remain a prolific goal scorer.
