For the first time since he became a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, forward Max Domi has been made a healthy scratch by coach Craig Berube.

There had been hints at it, and plenty of calls from fans for it to happen for a while now, but Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi has found himself as a healthy scratch for the first time since signing with the team in July of 2023.

A first for Max Domi as he is scratched by the Maple Leafs

Domi has no goals or assists in his last six games with the Maple Leafs. Across the entire 2025-26 season, he has 3 goals and 3 assists in 23 games.
Coach Craig Berube is clearly trying to send Domi a message, as he scratched him despite the fact that it was announced just before this evening's game against the Washington Capitals that William Nylander would sit after coming down with an illness.
Domi has been primarily used as a centre by Berube this season and statistics show it is simply not working for him or the team.
Domi is the kind of player that can really raise morale on a team when he's playing well. While I'm sure this wasn't an easy decision for Berube to make, it's the right one for the team. Coasting can't be tolerated in a season where missing the playoffs is a legitimate possibility.
This is another interesting development in what has been a season full of adversity for the Maple Leafs so far.
