Maple Leafs concern level rises a little bit after defenseman Brandon Carlo was absent from practice after several bumps and bruises from last night's game.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were able to mount a furious comeback last night against the Pittsburgh Penguins, however, it seems that they might have come out of it a little worse for wear after Brandon Carlo was absent from practice.
The 28-year-old defenseman blocked 6 shots, including 2 in the final moments of the game, that certainly left him in considerable amount of pain. With the Penguins pressing, Carlo ate two hard shots in the ankle region, but did his best to get right back up to finish off the shift.
His efforts certainly didn't go unnoticed, primarily from
Anthony Stolarz, who held nothing but praise for his performance and gutsy effort in front of his goal.
You absolutely love that. It takes a lot of balls and courage to do that, so it's something I appreciate.
While the extent of his absence is not yet known, it is certainly a concerning issue with
Chris Tanev already sidelined. The shorthanded Leafs featured both Phil Myers and
Dakota Mermis during their afternoon skate, so it will be interesting to hear an update from head coach Craig Berube after the fact.
Filling his shoes in the lineup is going to be a tall task as the 6'5 defenseman has averaged 20:09 TOI in 13 games thus far with 2 assists, a plus-2 rating, and 25 blocked shots, including 11 over the last 2 games.
The Maple Leafs host the Utah Mammoth tomorrow night, but then don't play again until Saturday, which should give Carlo some time to ice those bruises. Nevertheless, the Leafs should have an official update on his status shortly after practice concludes.
