After Auston Matthews scored on the power play to pull the Leafs within one in the second period Thursday in San Jose, goaltender Joseph Woll made a horrendous mistake in playing the puck while attempting to make a pass in his crease. His attempted pass bounced off the skate of Sharks forward William Eklund and into the net, putting the Sharks back up by two.
Following practice on Friday, Woll was asked about the mis-play and admitted he had a lapse in judgement.
"Just a bad play. Sometimes you make bad plays. I was looking up ice. My brain turned off for a second, and it's unfortunate. Once something like that happens, you have to do your best to put it behind you. There's no point in lingering on it."
With the Leafs playing Saturday and Sunday, it would be more surprising if Woll didn't get one of the starts. Which game however, depends on how fast Berube believes the former third-round pick can bounce back from his sub-par performance.
There's no question that both of the Leafs' netminders need to be better, especially with the playoffs looming.
