Maple Leafs forward and pending RFA Matthew Knies' price continues to rise, but TSN's Chris Johnson has revealed the truth behind the reality of the threat of an offer sheet.
This year has been a true coming-out party for Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies, who is on the cusp of doubling his goal output from last year (15), currently sitting with 29 so far this year with 4 games remaining.
Knies is also a pending restricted free agent, and is among the many decisions that Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving will have to make, along with the futures of John Tavares and Mitch Marner, both of whom are pending UFA's.
During a recent segment of "Insider Trading" on TSN, analyst Chris Johnston said that he's not worried about the chances of Knies being given an offer sheet from an opposition club and that his next contract is a "big priority" for Toronto management.
"Matthew Knies is a big priority for the Leafs. While can understand to some degree where the speculation of an offer sheet might be out there and being discussed, I don't believe it's really a threat when it comes to this player.
There's a few reasons for that. Matthew Knies himself is not really interested in entertaining an offer sheet. The 2nd part is the Maple Leafs feel they have plenty of cap space to get their business done this summer."
Johnston said that he believes the Leafs would match any potential offer sheet that Knies could receive.
"What happens with the pending UFAs, I think the decisions on Knies will come from that in does he go for a long term deal, a short term deal, how much money will be left, will be decided at that point. Heading into this summer, I really believe the Leafs are in a position to sign this player - if he were to sign an offer sheet, they'd likely match it."
Playing in his 2nd full NHL year, Knies has 55 points (29G, 26A) in 74 games.
