TSN's Pierre LeBrun has made a very keen observation about ex-Leafs captain John Tavares and believes that he should be recognized for a very specific reason.

Don't look now, but the Maple Leafs hold a 3-point cushion over the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning for top spot in the Atlantic Division in the very late stages of the regular season, eyeing a division win and home ice to begin the playoffs.
One of the huge reasons why the Leafs are in the position they're in right now has been the play of veteran pivot John Tavares, who has amassed 69 points across 67 games this season.
On Monday, TSN's Pierre LeBrun appeared on OverDrive and went out of his way to commend Tavares for the way he handled the passing of the torch, and handing off the captaincy to Auston Matthews and not letting it impact his attitude, work ethic or play at all this season.
"The final thing on [John] Tavares, and I'm sure you guys have mentioned this... he gave up the captaincy and didn't blink an eye and didn't let it affect his day-to-day job.

There are examples in the history of this league where that may not have been very well welcomed by a guy... there is zero evidence that John Tavares has been a different human being any single day of this season for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and I think he deserves credit for that."
LeBrun is absolutely right and we're not talking enough about how well Tavares has handled losing the "C" to Auston Matthews. In fact, not only has it not impacted Tavares negatively, he has actually shown a tremendous level of support for Matthews in his first year as captain, right from the earliest stages of the transition.
There is a lot of talk lately about what will happen with Tavares and fellow pending UFA Mitch Marner this summer. The consensus seems to be that we'll end up seeing Tavares ink an extension, though things seem far less certain when it comes to Marner.
