If Negotiations Fall Apart, Could the Maple Leafs Pry Superstar Winger Out of Minnesota?

With Kirill Kaprizov's future in Minnesota uncertain, the Maple Leafs could be in a prime position to pursue the superstar forward in free agency in 2026.
Don't look now, but the Minnesota Wild may be at a bit of an impasse with Kirill Kaprizov.
Kaprizov, set to become a 2026 unrestricted free agent, is one of the NHL's most electrifying offensive players. Last season, he posted 25 goals and 56 points in just 41 games - a pace that shows exactly how much he can tilt the ice. Wherever he lands, he'll change the trajectory of that franchise.
For the Maple Leafs, who continue to hunt for a true top-six forward, this could be the opening they've been waiting for. While Kaprizov won't hit the market until July 1, 2026, Toronto may already be laying groundwork for a major move.
Interestingly, the Leafs' inability to sign
Brad Marchand or
Sam Bennett, who were both heavily linked to Toronto last season, might turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Instead of being tied down with term and money, the Leafs ended the season with something they haven't had in years: financial flexibility.
Kaprizov would fit seamlessly in Toronto's lineup. Unlike
Mitch Marner, whose game leans more toward pure playmaking, Kaprizov brings elite vision with a heavier scoring touch. Pairing him with
Auston Matthews and/or
William Nylander could instantly create one of the league's most dangerous forward groups.
According to Puckpedia, Toronto is projected to have $24.8 million in cap space in 2026. While several in-house free agents will need new deals, the numbers suggest the Leafs would have the space to make a serious run at Kaprizov.
For a franchise desperate to take the next step, landing a superstar like Kaprizov might be worth the wait.
