The Maple Leafs announced on Thursday morning that they have placed defenseman Chris Tanev on injured reserve due to the injury he suffered on Tuesday night.

Chris Tanev left Tuesday's game with an upper-body injury after colliding with New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer during the second period.
A scramble in front of the Leafs' net resulted in Mercer's helmet hitting Tanev on the chin, which sent the defenseman to the ice, where he collected himself briefly before leaving the ice.

Update on Tanev Indicated He Would Miss Time

Leafs head coach Craig Berube told reporters on Wednesday that it's possible that Tanevwould miss time as a result of the injury. That was confirmed on Thursday morning when the Leafs announced the 35-year-old was placed on injured reserve, retroactive to October 21st.

Maple Leafs Recall Defenseman in Wake of Chris Tanev's Injury

In addition to placing the Toronto native on injured reserve, the Leafs announced they recalled NHL journeyman and veteran Dakota Mermis from the Toronto Marlies.
Mermis skated in three games for the Leafs last season, as well as one for the Utah Mammoth during his brief stint with them after passing through waivers by both clubs.
Although the Leafs recalled Mermis, the likely candidate to replace Tanev in the lineup for the back-to-back against the Buffalo Sabres over the weekend is Philippe Myers. We will know more once the Leafs take to the ice for practice later on Thursday.
