Following the conclusion of the 2024-25 NHL regular season, the Maple Leafs have shared some exciting news regarding pending free agent forward Mitch Marner.
With the Leafs coming back to beat the Detroit Red Wings in overtime on Thursday, they officially put a stamp on a wonderful season after defeating the Buffalo Sabres earlier in the week,
capturing their first ever Atlantic Division title. One player who played a pivotal role in the team's overall success this season was the newly-minted 100-point man, Mitch Marner.
In speaking about Marner on Friday, Leafs GM Brad Treliving had nothing but good things to say about a player who he believes is one of the team's premier leaders ahead of their first round matchup with the Ottawa Senators.
"He's been a leader, he's been a top player and I think he's in a real good spot," Treliving said of Marner, after stating that the pending UFA had a fabulous season.
On top of Treliving's wonderful comments about Marner, the Leafs also made a significant announcement about the star winger.
Marner was named the Molson Cup First Star Winner of the season after producing a career-high 102 points.
Everyone knows that Marner's status with the Leafs beyond this season likely hinges on his upcoming playoff performance. A successful post-season run likely means a record-setting deal for Marner, which could set the market for star wingers around the league. However, a mediocre showing could result in Marner playing in a different jersey next season.
Naturally, we know that Marner refused, so it will be interesting to see whether or not that has impacted his thought process on whether to stay and re-sign with the Leafs or take his talents elsewhere.
Regardless of the outcome, the Leafs' announcement that Marner had won the Molson Cup First Star of the season is something worth celebrating. Hopefully, it will allow Marner to enter the playoffs with an aura of confidence about him and that it will allow him to take over playoff games the same way he's been able to do in the regular season.
