Former Maple Leafs enforcer Ryan Reaves recently joined the Leafs Morning Take podcast and revealed how he feels about Auston Matthews as an NHL captain.

The Maple Leafs have undergone a big transformation this summer, and the changes were not just limited to the departure of Mitch Marner, who was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights. Another veteran player who was moved was Ryan Reaves, who was sent to the San Jose Sharks in a trade earlier this month.
Reaves has been very vocal of late, not only speaking out about how he was treated during his time in Toronto, but a variety of other topics as well. One such topic, which he addressed this week on Leafs Morning Take, was his opinion of Auston Matthews as an NHL captain.

Ryan Reaves has given a rave review of Auston Matthews as an NHL captain, citing his grind mentality as his best leadership quality

"I think a lot of his leadership is 'lead by example'. He works incredibly hard in practice, and on the ice, I think you see how hard he works in all 3 zones. Obviously he grinded through some issues this year and really tried to grind through it for the team... maybe not the most vocal captain I've ever had, but everyone leads differently, right?"

Reaves also gave Matthews a lot of praise for his very underrated work ethic, which he believes set a great example for younger guys like Matthew Knies, who recently signed a lucrative new contract with the Leafs.
"To me, Auston was a guy who really led by example, really tried to drag guys into battle... never coasted in practice, always working his a** off. On the ice before everyone else, off the ice last. Something that, as a vet, was great to see, but it was something that really teaches those younger guys how to be the best in the world."

Reaves hopes to play at least two more seasons so that he can reach the 1000 NHL games milestone before he rides off into the sunset and retires from professional hockey. Playing in a rebuilding market like San Jose should help him play a lot more games than he would have in Toronto. Best of luck to Reavo out west.
