A former Maple Leafs enforcer has taken aim at the NHL's Department of Player Safety for their decision to suspend Bobby McMann.
Bobby McMann was ejected in the third period of the Leafs' win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night, and has subsequently been suspended.
Assessed a match penalty for swinging his stick and making contact with the head of Lightning forward Oliver Bjorkstrand, McMann had a hearing on Tuesday, and was ultimately handed a one-game suspension for the incident.
Former Leafs enforcer Jay Rosehill calls out Department of Player Safety's inconsistency
With the NHL's puzzling decision to suspend McMann, fans and some media members, including former Leafs forward Jay Rosehill, were quick to dig up an incident between the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers from 2023.
In the video, shared to 'X', then Rangers captain Jacob Trouba viciously two-handed Trent Frederic in the side of the helmet.
Rosehill captioned his post of the video asking for an explanation as to how Trouba was only fined, but McMann was suspended.
The former Rangers defenseman was only fined $5000 for his actions.
Although Trouba wasn't given a penalty, which is likely why McMann received a suspension, Player Safety could have easily issued a hearing for Trouba then, or they could have waived McMann's suspension this time around.
Either way, the league has once again showed how inconsistent it is with its rulings and supplemental discipline -- something that has become an issue with fans, players and coaches since George Parros has been in the office.
