Former Maple Leafs captain John Tavares leaks some important information regarding Max Domi's preparations, but Domi is downplaying the added dedication.
Following the win, veteran forward John Tavares was elated for Domi, a fellow London Knights alumni, and revealed what he thought of the goal to put the Leafs up by 2 games in the series.
"Unreal. Great for him, and great for our team."
Tavares was asked about the extra work Max Domi has been putting in with the former captain himself, as well as Leafs staffer Patrick O'Sullivan after practice. Tavares was very quick to praise Domi for his work ethic, confirming that the work he's putting in after practice is really showing in his game right now.
"Credit to his drive to continue to sharpen up on different ways to just be a little better, a little sharper, execute just one or two more plays... it's funny how that can make the difference sometimes.
It goes to show, in overtime, he gets the puck on his stick, real calm and poised, on the entry before he had the decent shot off, and then makes a play in traffic and obviously just a really nice release, great timing, and a hell of a goal."
Domi was asked after the game about the extra work with Tavares and O'Sullivan, but immediately took the attention away from himself and put the focus right back on the team, like the true team-first player that he is.
"I mean [Patrick O'Sullivan] is great. JT is great, but that stuff, we'll keep that in-house, what we do in practice. We all work hard, we all get our touches in... Tonight was just a huge win for our group.
We needed that one, and it's behind us now. We've got to flush it and get ready for the next one. It's going to be the toughest one yet, and every day gets harder and harder. We're excited about the test."
Domi's attitude is what every player's attitude should be, from the way he denounced any individual success and makes it all about the team, to the way he sticks up for his teammates, to the way he doesn't take things personal when he receives a demotion, and is shifted down lower in the lineup.
Domi is a heart and soul player who gives it everything he has every night and it's wonderful to see him succeed the way he has early in these playoffs.
Even if he doesn't want the attention to be on himself, it's important that we still do our best to highlight these points and make sure that he gets the recognition that he deserves -- not just from Tavares, but from the fans and media as well.
