Former Maple Leafs defenseman Tyson Barrie made a surprising retirement announcement and has shared what could be the funniest retirement statement of all-time.
His announcement on Monday came as a bit of a surprise, which Barrie leaned into when releasing a statement indicating his plans to hang up his skates. The former third-round pick poked fun at himself for playing in just 13 games last season as well as his -- at times poor puck management.
"Well for those who thought I retired two years ago, I don't blame you, but I am officially hanging them up. From wearing the green jacket in 2016 to leading the league in points and not recording a single Norris vote. It's been an epic run," began Barrie's statement on his Instagram account.
Barrie then went on to thank his friends, family, coaches, teammates and fans before taking one final shot at himself and announcing what his post-playing plans are.
"I've made some beautiful plays and plenty of brutal ones too-probably more of the latter-but it's all part of the journey."
For those that knew Barrie, being able to poke fun at himself was very on brand for the 34-year-old who will be taking his personality and spending his free time working on his beer brand Chilly Ones. To read his hilarious statement in its entirety check out the link below.
Regardless of how you feel Barrie though, he was clearly one of those players that everyone loved to be around and we wish him nothing but the best in his life after hockey.
