Craig Berube made it clear just how frustrated he is with his group after the Maple Leafs no-showed against the Capitals in a 4-0 loss.

Last night's game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Washington Capitals was a great representation of how the season has gone for Craig Berube's club thus far. They were thoroughly dominated by a true playoff contender and looked to be playing aimlessly and without effort throughout.
The Leafs also left Dennis Hildeby on an island to fend for himself as the rookie goaltender allowed 4 goals on 29 shots, but was far from the culprit of the disappointing defeat, which has been another ongoing theme in 2025-26.
The leadership group and star players showed zero passion and even less effort in the loss. Similarly to the fanbase, it was not lost on the coaching staff either, as head coach Craig Berube had a few choice words for the team after the game.
Asked about how the Capitals were able to rise to the occasion and why the Maple Leafs weren't able to show that same level of urgency, a frustrated Berube made it clear who he blamed for the loss, as he pointed towards his players to answer the question.
Ask those guys, not me.
Berube should rightfully be concerned with his team's effort as the top players did not show up. Morgan Rielly was a minus-3 with no hits. Auston Matthews was also a minus-3 and fired just 2 shots on goal in 19:45 TOI. William Nylander was a minus-2 with 1 shot in 16:51. John Tavares faired slightly better with 4 shots, but was held without a point, a hit or a block in 16:18.
Berube also kept things short when asked about his top line, which featured Matthews, Nylander, and Matthew Knies. The veteran bench boss has rarely front-loaded his top line, but he's tried it a few times lately, to no avail.
It's hard to see the light at the end of this tunnel because there are very few things to spin in a positive manner this season. They wont have much time to dwell on last night's defeat either, as they head to Nashville immediately for a clash with the Preds on Saturday and then head off to Dallas on Sunday, before a home matchup against Pittsburgh before the Christmas break.
Perhaps we'll see a motivated group looking to exorcise some of their demons, but based on what we've seen thus far, it's certainly not an easy task with this group.
